Founded in 1923 at the College of William and Mary, the PSoV (Poetry Society of Virginia) is the second oldest state poetry society in the nation. The Society sponsors annual contests for students and adults, offers programs for schools throughout the Commonwealth, and maintains an active calendar of meetings, opportunities and events for poets old and young.

Students may enter the individual prize categories below in the appropriate grade level category. Poem entered cannot be entered in other grade level category. Entry rules apply to all categories.

The Poetry Society Prize

Exclusively for Virginia students in Grades 6-8

The Virginia Student Prize
Sponsored by a Poetry Society of VA Member
Exclusively for Virginia students in Grades 9-12
Any form. Any subject.
36 line limit.
Awards: $50, $30, $20

Spoken Word Prize
Exclusively for Virginia students Grades 9-12
Any subject. Anonymous MP3 format.
3 minute limit.
Awards: $25, $15, $10


Winners will be notified in April, 2019 and posted on the website.

All poems are presented anonymously to the judges.

ENTRY RULES

1. Entries must be entered into the system between Nov. 1, 2018 and Jan. 19, 2019. Entries will NOT be accepted by mail or email.

2. All entries must be in English, original and unpublished. Author retains copyright.

3. Poems that have previously won an award in a Poetry Society of VA contest are not eligible for entry. Poems submitted to the Poetry VA Student Contest cannot be submitted to the Poetry VA Adult Contest.

4. Entrants may only enter one poem per category, and a specific poem may only be entered in one category.

5. By entering your poem you are affirming that the work is your original creation.


We will publish first, second, and third prize winners’ poems, name (with the parents’ permission), school and teacher on our website in April 2018 after notifying the winners.
