1st place: “Ocean” by Freida Camacho,
Center for Teaching & Learning, 119 Cross Point Road, Edgecomb, ME 04556 Judge’s comment: The verbs in “Ocean” just pop: “Trudge, swirl, amble, surge, crash, rush, drift…” The verbs created a very vivid experience for me to read. I felt the writer truly experienced the ocean.

2nd place: “I Am” by Baker Cullum,
Mountain Brook Elementary, 3020 Cambridge Rd., Mountain Brook, AL Judge’s comment: The self-awareness of this poem moved me. The contrasts that describe the speaker show that the writer is aware of the many facets of being a person.

Judge’s comment: The tone of “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” is reflective, calm and vivid. The strong verbs and nouns are evocative and hallmarks of good writing.
