Welcome to the Poetry Society of Virginia's web site. Since 1923 the PSV has been striving to encourage excellence in the writing, reading, and appreciation of poetry. Explore our site, learn about the PSV, and join us in the celebration of the art of poetry. The Meeting Schedule for 2009/2010 is listed below. The next meeting will be in the Southeastern Region in Sept. We hope to see you at our next gathering. Congratulations to our winners in our annual Poetry Contest.
Be sure to look up the web site of Tina Morris, recently added to our Members Websites page. Tina's site includes Mostly Poetry & A Litte Prose including poetry from a guest poet.
Need a gift? Don't forget our listing of members books. They make excellent Holiday gifts. Member Diana Woodcock is the most recent to have added information about her chapbook to the list.
Four Virginia Poets Laureate PSV has now published an exciting new book as a companion to the DVD published earlier. The book contains: a brief history of the position of Poet Laureate of Virginia; brief bios of each of the four laureates; the text of the poems presented by the four; critical reviews of the poetry; and classroom exercises for teachers. The book was edited by the current Poet Laureate of Virginia, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, and Ed Lull. Open the Poets Laureate page on the left for more information about the book and DVD and how to order.
Help Save Our History!
You may have vital information. The Poetry Society of Virginia was founded in 1923. But unfortunately our archives contain almost nothing about the founders or the officers, meetings, and activities of the earlier years and even into mid-century and later. Please look for any LETTERS or DOCUMENTS you may have about the Society's history. Also, WHEN YOU ARE READING, please keep an eye out for any reference to the Society in BIOGRAPHIES, PUBLISHED LETTERS, HISTORIES, ARTICLES, ETC. Even possibly apocryphal ORAL INFORMATION you have heard about the Society's early years, perhaps from one of our now-deceased members, can be valuable as clues for research. No information is too insignificant. Please send a copy of the relevant material or bibliographical reference to our Archivist (Warren M. Harris, 274 Bradley Street, Abingdon, VA 24210) or contact a Society officer. We have a fine story to tell; let's see how much of it we can recover!
