Devolution by Martha Steger
We chose not to claim our relationship with ape until the whoreson dogs tore us both to oblivion and then we got it -- We must be part of all organic life.
The flatworm that lives inside us, among us, goldenrod groping an existence in dry roadbeds, the whale that walked on sandy shores and returned to the seas again, Darwin's finch -- the seedeater that sings. We should be part of all organic life.
Remember how flatworms die in unsuitable hosts, how goldenrod goes to seed and soil, how blood of hunted whales reddens the seas as the hawk swoops down for the kill. Part of all organic life.
(Note: "whoreson dog" [Ezra Pound])
