IN THE WAKE
They fell, O God, they fell, Telling we who beheld of their public and immediate destiny, Never will we be the same, because they fell.
Woundedness surrounds us all, Struck to the heart we are. Love bleeds. We know what the Blood of the Lamb is,in a new way: The blood of the innocent.
They were the sacrifice, Now we, who survive, must rise in strength and wisdom. Our loss must never be forgotten as we remember those brave voices: The stewardess calmly describing final moments, The husband/father who, with others, contrived to bring their plane down short of its intended target, May their names be forever blessed, bathed in our tears as they fell.
May their families be sustained by our common concern, our knowledge of their loss, our prayers for comfort, May the firefighters, the rescuers, the hospitals, doctors, nurses, be blessed and find restfulness and peace, for the help that they gave, the dangers that they faced so willingly.
We might even send Bin Laden a note of thanks along with our sticks, our stones, our host of weaponry, and the very presence of our spirit, For sending us a mighty wake-up call, of such a nature that we united together and became the stronger for it, in our sorrow.
May every person in this nation remain strong and give sustenance, one to another, For what is yet to come, because they fell.
