The Philosophy of War
My friend and I will often talk about the day’s events, but lately these discussions have become much more intense.
At times I think we’re going to war, but then, perhaps we’re not. Some say Saddam has lethal stuff, let’s put him on the spot!
“You know he’s always just ignored the U.N.’s clear instruction.” But is there evidence he has the tools of mass destruction?
“Your focus is entirely wrong; that’s said for press consumption. We owe him one resounding kick - a Desert Storm resumption.”
You mean he should complete the work his Father failed to do? “Exactly, but this time we must ensure the tyrant’s through.”
Are you quite sure this talk of war is not just a reflection that in a month or so we face a nationwide election?
“Well, politics may play a part, but let us not forget that he is evil, we are good, so he presents the threat!”
But doesn’t world opinion sway decisions such as this? “If countries fail to back us here, their views we must dismiss!”
I’m just not sure we should invade a sovereign Arab state. Won’t this destroy the friendships we have tried to cultivate?
“Those friendships only last as long as we perform their work. They don’t trust him, but take him on? That task they’ll surely shirk.”
You mean you think they want for us to take him down as planned? “Of course, but not to hang around to dominate the land.”
I must admit I’m still confused about the focus change. Bin Laden’s fading from the news, Hussain has come in range.
“When we’re at war, you know we must find someone to attack. Since we can’t find Bin Laden, we can surely find Iraq!”
“Remaining hid in mountain caves, Bin Laden seems inclined. Saddam’s great ego and life style make him a breeze to find.”
So you say only fight a war that’s possible to win? “Of course! Success must be assured, or why on earth begin!”

The Venom of the Viper
Wandering whitecaps dot the peaceful sea; Azure ocean, azure sky belie the truth. This placid scene becomes a gruesome sight With bloated bodies bobbing in the waves. Could humankind comport itself this way And execute so vile a scheme as this?
Busy people working, shopping, playing, Running errands, doing daily chores. The detonation blew their lives away, Their hopes and dreams and futures all destroyed. "A holy war" proponents would proclaim; An oxymoron born of twisted minds.
War has always dealt with life and death, With ugliness almost beyond belief. But history books address the nobler goals, Ignoring all the horror of the fray. Courage, sacrifice, and bravery Lent honor to the deadly game of war.
Terrorism has no place on Earth; There is no honor in these dreadful deeds. Fearful felons flee their ghastly scene While victims draw their final breath of life. What creatures can support this deadly plague? What mindset justifies these craven acts?
Americans must not capitulate, Nor hide behind a wall of fear and doubt. Patriots who died for freedom's cause Would never understand our backing down. Just one more task for leaders of the world: Destroy the vipers; drain their venom dry.
