We illuminate Virginia’s poets, cultures, communities, and literary power by making and sharing poems. We are committed to fostering an inclusive community aimed at creating a sense of belonging in Virginia’s poetry community. We are committed to equity and the mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all.

Our Story
In May 1923, a small group of poets who wanted to stimulate an interest in poetry in the Commonwealth met in the Chapel of the Wren Building at the College of William & Mary. The group drafted a constitution and bylaws for the organization and named it The Poetry Society of Virginia. Dr. Charles N. Feidelson served as the new organization’s first president.
Collectively, we’re writing the story of Virginia’s literary history, one verse, one poem, one poet at a time.
Our Mission
Our mission is to cultivate the writing and enjoyment of poetry through a wide range of literary programs, events, and resources from regions across Virginia.
The Poetry Society of Virginia is a dedicated nonprofit organization advancing poetry across our great state and beyond. We are building a vibrant and inclusive poetic community, where poetry thrives as a bridge between individuals, communities, institutions, and cultures.
Join in our quest to elevate the power of poetry and make Virginia’s poetic legacy an enduring source of inspiration and connection.
WHO WE ARE
Through publications, member readings, visiting poets, contests, workshops, in-school programs, festivals, and other activities, PSV has deepened the appreciation of poetry throughout Virginia communities.
Membership in the society has grown to over 400, with about 15% of members living outside of Virginia.
Visiting poets have included Robert Frost, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Carl Sandburg, Richard Wilbur, Donald Hall, Charles Wright—and more recently, Gregory Orr, Dorianne Laux, Joseph Millar, Jesse Graves, Tim Seibles, Margaret Mackinnon, Dan and Suzanne Stryk, and Jane Ellen Glasser.
Our organization has been instrumental in assisting the Governor of Virginia with the selection of Poet Laureate. An appointed PSV committee makes recommendations to the organization’s elected President who then forwards nominations to the Governor for his final review and decision.
PSV’s historical archives are housed in the special collections repositories at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

What We Value
As a cornerstone organization in Virginia’s cultural heritage, we uplift poetry as a powerful means of connection, a living chronicle of the human experience, and a vehicle for expanding language.
