The Poetry of Society of Virginia is proud to affliate with Old Dominion University, Dr. Luisa A. Igloria, Past Virginia Poet Laureate, and Winnie Wong, ODU Graduate Assistant, to promote the Virginia Poets Database housed at ODU. The Database is an invaluable resource for Virginia’s community of poets, and we are excited for upcoming updates and additions.
Also, if you are a Virginian poet by birth or residency (past or present), please consider adding yourself to the Database. Further details may be found below.
About the Virginia Poets Database

Greetings to the Poetry Society of Virginia,
In 2021, Luisa A. Igloria initiated the Virginia Poets Database as part of her program of poetry projects when she was appointed Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is a free literary and educational Digital Commons resource permanently housed in the Digital Commons
of the Perry Library at Old Dominion University, where we are building an archive of poets based in Virginia.
The Virginia Poets Database aims to build an archive of poets born and/or based in Virginia—poets who are current residents, and/or poets who have spent significant time doing literary work in Virginia. The goal is to feature historically recognized or established poets alongside emerging poets, and spotlight those from underrepresented communities. Further, it aims to gather information that shows the richness and diversity of poetry and poets in the state. We are also in the process of building additional features like teacher resources, reviews, and interviews, so please watch for these in the months ahead.
If you are a Virginia-born poet, a poet who is a current resident, and/or a poet who has spent significant time doing literary work in Virginia (for example, poets must have resided in the state for more than the duration of their time in a university program), you can submit here. Complete criteria can be found here.
Please feel free to share this call for submissions within your network.
Thank you for your consideration.
Warmly,
Winnie Wong, Graduate Assistant
